If you are going through cancer treatment or living with a medical condition that affects your oral health, visiting the dentist can feel like one more thing to worry about.

At Dentique, we want it to feel different. Our Medical & Oncology Oral Care service provides gentle, carefully planned dental care for patients who may need additional support before, during or after medical treatment.

You don’t need to know what dental treatment you need before you come to us.

Tell us what you are going through. We will listen, assess your oral health and help you understand the next steps.

Why your mouth may need additional care

Cancer treatment and certain medical conditions or medications can affect your mouth, teeth and gums. Sometimes there may be no symptoms, but dental treatment still needs to be planned differently.

That is why we take additional time with these appointments.

  • Dry or uncomfortable mouth
  • Sensitive teeth or gums
  • Mouth ulcers, soreness or changes in taste
  • Bleeding gums or increased risk of decay
  • Difficulty eating or wearing dentures
  • Infections or slower healing
  • Oral changes you are unsure are normal
01 — BEFORE

Before cancer treatment

If possible, we recommend having your mouth and teeth assessed before chemotherapy, radiotherapy or other cancer treatment begins. The purpose is not unnecessary dental treatment—it is to identify problems that could become harder to manage once medical treatment has started.

We can assess:

  • Teeth, restorations, decay, infection or broken teeth
  • Gums, plaque control and periodontal health
  • Mouth and soft tissues, with a baseline check
  • Dentures, bridges and implants for cleanliness, comfort and trauma
  • Individual oral-health risks related to diagnosis, planned treatment and medication

With your permission, we can communicate with your oncologist, haematologist or medical consultant so your dental and medical care work together.

02 — DURING

During cancer treatment

Your mouth may change during treatment. Some patients experience very few problems; others develop dryness, sensitivity, ulcers, taste changes or difficulty maintaining their usual oral-hygiene routine.

We can support you throughout this period with:

  • Gentle oral examinations
  • Hygiene, prevention and monitoring
  • Dry-mouth support
  • Assessment of ulcers or painful areas
  • Denture adjustments
  • Monitoring for oral infection
  • Appropriate treatment of dental problems
  • Personalised oral-care advice

We will always consider your current medical treatment before a dental procedure. Sometimes the safest decision is to postpone treatment; sometimes a dental problem needs prompt attention. We will explain which applies to you.

03 — AFTER

After treatment

Finishing cancer treatment does not necessarily mean that your mouth immediately returns to how it was before. Some effects can continue for months or longer.

Dry mouth can significantly increase the risk of dental decay. Patients who have received certain treatments involving the head, neck or jaws may require particular precautions for future dental procedures.

We can continue to look after your oral health with a personalised long-term prevention and review programme.

Extra care, not extra worry.

We listen first. We review your medical treatment and medications, carefully examine your mouth, and explain what we find in clear language.

We only recommend dental care appropriate for your situation. When information from your medical team is needed, we help coordinate it.

You should not feel that you have to work everything out yourself.

Your dental care doesn’t happen in isolation.

With your permission, Dentique may communicate with your oncologist, haematologist, medical consultant or hospital team. This can be important when medication affects immunity, bleeding, bone healing or recovery.
